SHILLONG: Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Prem Singh has written to the Government expressing his desire to go on Central deputation instead of continuing as the State police chief.

An official source on Monday said that Singh wrote the letter sometime back but the Government is yet to take a decision.

Though the exact reason is not known, sources said that Singh is fed up of the mess in the police department.

The frequent change of DGPs has become the order of the day as per the wish of the Government which had affected the morale of the senior police officials in the State.

Singh, who is known to be a clean and honest police official, had also written a similar letter when his name was shortlisted for appointment as the DGP during the last meeting of the State Security Commission.

With the Meghalaya Government passing the amended police bill in the just concluded Assembly session there are indications that the Government will go ahead with the selection of a new police chief.

The Government brought a new clause in the police bill which restricts police officials availing the pay and rank of DGPs, in Meghalaya or on deputation outside the state, from being appointed as the State DGP.
