SHILLONG: The Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh assured that he will examine whether the minimum educational qualifications should be applicable to driving license applicants.
As per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Rules, 2007, completion of class 8 is the minimum educational qualification required for a person to obtain a driving license.
However, this has put drivers in the State in a difficult situation as there are many drivers who have not passed class 8.
The Transport Minister said that he will take initiative to see that the rule does not apply to those who have already obtained driving licenses and added that it can be applicable to those who will get fresh driving
licenses.
“I have taken over the department recently and have to examine the relevant rules to ensure that the drivers are not harassed”, Lyngdoh added.
The matter figured in the Assembly with the HSPDP legislator Ardent Basaiwmoit seeking clarity on the educational qualification of the drivers. He narrated the difficulties of the drivers whose driving licenses are not renewed on account of their educational qualifications.
