SHILLONG: Expressing their serious doubts over the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the HSPDP is contemplating to move before the Election Commission of India (ECI) to revert back to the old paper ballot voting system.

“We have got inputs that the EVMs used in the recent Assembly election in the State were defective. Not only the HSPDP but everybody are expressing their doubts whether the EVMs are foolproof,” HSPDP general secretary Enbin K Raswai told reporters after the party General Council meeting recently. He said that the fact that one of the EVM in one of the polling station in Madanriting could not be opened is a proof in itself that there is something wrong in the system.

“We also failed to understand that even most developed countries like United States and Great Britain are still sticking with the paper ballots. I really do not know why India is insisting on the use of the EVMs,” Raswai said.

The party general secretary said that the party would continue to oppose the use of EVMs until there is a certification from an authenticate body that the system is fool proof.

Earlier, the UDP and NPP also voiced their strong reservations on the credibility of the EVMs.

The two parties also voiced their support to revert back to the old ballot system.
