NONGPOH: The main accused in the June 22, 2012 gang-rape case in Umling has surrendered before the Ri Bhoi Police here on Tuesday.
Police sources said that the accused, Resembel Star Lyngdoh Mawnai of Umling, had been absconding since the incident in which a girl from Tripura was gang-raped by four miscreants at Umling.
During interrogation Mawnai admitted to his involvement in the crime, sources said.
The three other accused in the incident, Ranaldo Jana (18), Kyntiewborlang Syiem (15) and Lumjingshai Tangsang (21), had been arrested and subsequently released on bail after interrogation by police.
It may mentioned here, that on the June 22, 2012 a girl from Tripura who was on her way to Guwahati to attend a job interview along with her brother Nukul Debnath in a truck, was gang-raped by the four after the vehicle broke down on reaching Umling at around 3 am.
The youths who had come to the area on an auto rickshaw (ML10 – 2408) pulled the girl out of the truck and raped her besides badly assaulting her brother Debnath who tried to rescue her.
Police sources said that Mawnai had surrendered after realising that it would not be possible for him to elude the cops any further.
