Chit fund: Whom to blame?

Editor,

Apropos the news item, “Chit fund scam revives demand for fresh probe against NSEM,” these chit fund scams/schemes were part of the western world too. In fact it was known as the “Ponzi Scheme”. The fraudulent scheme attracts investors promising them heavy returns. In such schemes, the first few investors are paid high returns. They in turn, invest more, thinking they would get more returns.

Now, my argument is, who is to be blamed for these frauds? The company/individuals who run such scheme or the investors who are greedy for a quick buck? In my opinion, the investors are equally guilty. There’s an old saying that if a deal is “too good to be true” it often is.

I remember when NSEM was just introduced in Meghalaya, I was explained about the scheme by one of the agents. I argued with the agent about what if the “Growth Rate” (which is more than 100% at that time) drops to 0% to which the agent couldn’t satisfactorily explain to me and for which I am glad that I didn’t join NSEM.

Hence, I believe that proper awareness should be there to educate people to stay away from such deals which are too good to be true.

 Kudos Rangdajied!

 Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to congratulate Rangdajied United FC on its historic elevation to I- League main. I am sure all football fans would share my sentiments. It is the hard work put in by the team management, players, coach, support staff and fans that the football club could achieve this milestone. When Shillong Lajong FC had qualified for I- League in 2009, the undersigned had written a letter in the media congratulating SLFC for being the first team from the North East to qualify for I- League. It was also mentioned that with SLFC’s achievement, other football clubs in the region would also be inspired to make it to I- League. Rangdajied has proved it!

It is a matter of pride for Shillong and the North East as a whole that in the 2013-14 season of I- League starting in Sep/Oct 2013 there will be two teams – SLFC and RUFC – from Shillong rubbing shoulders with other elite clubs of India to vie for the coveted title of I- League Champions. It is going to be football fest in Shillong with teams like Churchill Brothers, Dempo, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Md Sporting, etc descending on Shillong to play their respective matches against SLFC and RUFC as well. The football fans are in for a lot of football fanfare. The flood light facility at the JN Stadium at Polo Grounds will add up to the overall enjoyment. Other Shillong-based teams like Langsning and Royal Wahingdoh are also trying out and doing fine. It will not be a surprise if these teams also find a place in I- League sooner than later.

Shillong has definitely arrived on the football map of India. Please keep it up.

Yours etc.,

Education scam!

Editor,

Alas, just as everybody had doubted the veracity and claims of the infamous CMJ, everything is now out in the open. The Governor’s action deserves appreciation. He has nipped in the bud a scam before more students are duped by this fake university. The question now is, why was the Congress led government so eager to enact a legislation and to give recognition to many flimsy institutions, which paint a bad picture of the overall educational scenario in Meghalaya. This is how perhaps we have come to be called the Mecca of Fake Universities. Notably another such University – the William Carrey University is on the verge of closing shop. This University came up with the connivance of few politicians and a well known former Chief Minister of the state who is said to have facilitated many such institutions. So what next is the education department going to do and will the Government take immediate action?

Yours etc.,

Dominic S Wankhar
