SHILLONG: In the wake of the letter of Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary to CMJ University barring new admissions and an order to withdraw all degrees awarded, the State Government has decided to regulate the functioning of the private universities in the State.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said that provisions of Meghalaya Private University (Regulation of Establishment and Maintenance of Standard Bill), 2012, will be used to scrutinize the functioning of various private universities in the State.
As per the section 10 (I) of the Act, the Government had, last year, formed a Regulatory Board under Chairman L Roy and other members including educationists Caroline Marak and MPR Lyngdoh.
The State Government will also make use of the regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) as far as the functioning of the private universities is concerned, the Chief Secretary said.
In the past, the State Government, through the Private University Act, had allowed setting up of a large number of private universities, but there was hardly any scrutiny of such institutes which ultimately resulted in the present case of plight of students of CMJ University.
