Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday asserted that opposition parties AGP and BJP and even the ULFA have no moral right to demand his resignation over the chit fund scam in the state.

“Having woken up from their deep slumber, the AGP, BJP and the ULFA are now raising a hue and cry over the chit fund scam and demanding my resignation. Why did they keep silent even though they were aware of the developments?” Gogoi said in a statement here.

The opposition is blaming “us now when we have brought matters to the fore by initiating investigation by the CID against chit fund companies for duping gullible public and moving the CBI to take over the cases,” he said. “Why did they not raise it before despite being aware of the developments? Who knows that they may be hobnobbing with the chit fund companies that are now under the scanner? Only time will tell,” Gogoi added.

The AGP has no moral right to demand “my resignation when their own leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was found to have prima facie case against him in the LoC (Letter-of-credit) scam and these so-called leaders did not dare to demand his resignation but meekly accepted his leadership,” he said. Gogoi said his government had asked the CBI to take over the cases related to chit fund companies and a team of the investigating agency is currently in Guwahati.

“The process is on to hand over the cases to the agency and all the formalities would be completed in the next two to three days,” he said. “There is no question of delay as we have acted with alacrity and promptness unlike Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal where chit fund scams have taken place,” Gogoi added.
