Sindhu reaches semis of Malaysia Open

Kuala Lumpur: Top seed PV Sindhu reached the women’s singles semifinals of the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold here by winning both her second round and quarterfinal matches on Thursday.

Sindhu, now the World No. 13, first overcame Ngan Yi Cheung of Hong Kong 11-21, 21-18, 21-10 after which she beat Indonesian Hera Desi 21-17, 21-17 to advance to the last four.

The Indian, who reached the semis of the India Open last week, will face Thai third seed Sapsiree Taerattana-chai on Friday for a place in the final.

However, it was the end of the road for RMV Gurusaidutt, K Srikanth and Sameer Verma, who lost their respective men’s singles matches.

Gurusaidutt retired in the quarterfinal against Malaysia’s Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin. The Indian retired with the score reading 21-19, 5-2 in favour of his rival.

Malaysian third seed Daren Liew beat Srikanth 21-17, 22-20 while Hong Kong shuttler Yan Kit Chan beat Verma 21-15, 21-19 in third round matches. (IANS)
