SHILLONG: The Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase III is set for further delay and is now likely to be completed only in early 2014.

A senior official on Friday said that the project was set for completion by September but was delayed due to the recent-held Assembly election in the State.

Informing that the project is making a good progress at present, the official said, “We are taking all possible steps to see that the project is completed within the first quarter of 2014.”

The official, however, made it clear that the delay would not lead to cost escalation.

“We have already taken steps so that the cost of the project does not escalate,” the official said.

On the status of the project, the official said that at present, the distribution pipes are being laid across the city.

“The pipe laying work would take some more time since the proposed Phase III of the project covers an extensive area,” the official said. “Stage III of the GSWSS would provide upto 135 litres of water per head per day for a population of 5.12 lakh,” the official said, adding that the present Stage I and II of the scheme generates only 85 litres of water per head per day.
