SHILLONG: Young riders often zoom about in their bikes and cars with modified silencers in the city disturbing the mental peace of many citizens and taking a serious view on it, the Shillong Traffic Police realized an amount of Rs. 32,600 as fine from the owner who violates the law.

The Shillong Traffic Police has taken a strong cognizance of the plying of vehicles with modified silencers which result in noise pollution and those with H.I.D (High Intensity Discharge) bulbs as headlights.

East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang in a statement issue here on Friday said, “Shillong Traffic Police is viewing with serious concern the plying of vehicles with modified silencers and High Intensity Discharge) bulbs on headlights which blinds the drivers of vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

In its bid to curb down the trend, the Shillong Traffic Police conducted a special drive during the last four days and detained sixty six vehicles in this connection.

“Such modification of the vehicle is in violation of the Motor Vehicle Act,” SP added.

While asserting that the police will continue with the drive, the STP also requested the general public that in case they come across any such vehicle they may kindly pass on the information to the police giving the type of vehicle and registration number for which subsequently the Traffic Police will take legal action.

“Such information may be given to Police Control Room at 0364-2222277 and also to the Facebook of Shillong Traffic Police,” the statement added.
