Inter-district rivalry heats up at Megh Meet

SHILLONG: The third day of the ongoing Megh Meet 2013, which sees all 11 districts of the state vie for sporting honours, continued with intense competition on Wednesday between the various districts despite the heavy rain, which hindered the smooth conduct of certain outdoor sports disciplines.

Despite the downpour, the men’s kho kho event saw East Garo Hills, East Khasi Hills, North Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills all progressing to the semifinals.

The women from East Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills also made it to the semis of their kho kho event and they will be joined by East Jaintia Hills and South Garo Hills.

The men’s football saw a heated match between West Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills with the former teamcoming out as the eventual winners by three goals to one.

The other quarterfinal matches saw East Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills progressing to the last four.

East Jaintia Hills will now face West Jaintia Hills while East Khasi Hills will take on Ri-Bhoi in the women’s football semifinals.

The girls from Ri-Bhoi completely outperformed their opponents, South Garo Hills, in the last eight.

An astonishing 14 goals were scored by Ri-Bhoi, with South Garo Hills unable to respond.

Aidaris Kharmalki scored six and Solina Jaba scored four.

The semis of the men’s carom event will be held on Thursday at the SSA Hall, Polo Grounds, between South West Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills while South West Khasi Hills will square off against Ri-Bhoi in the other match.

The last four of the volleyball event for men will have West Garo Hills face South West Khasi Hills while West Khasi Hills will play East Khasi Hillls, both of which will be held on Thursday at 5th Ground.

East Khasi Hills scored a double triumph in the badminton team finals, with their men and women triumphing over West Jaintia Hills with similar scorelines of 2-0.

Meanwhile, the finals of the individual events for both men and women will be held on Thursday at the Tirot Sing Indoor Stadium from 12:00 noon onwards.
