Drug smugglers convicted

 SHILLONG: The Court of Special Judge (NDPS), Shillong recently convicted two persons involved in a drug smuggling case under NDPS Act committed in 2011.

The accused identified as Krishna Bahadur Thapa (46) and Lalhlimpui Khangte (22) were pleaded guilty and accordingly Thapa was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1 lakh and in default to undergo further one year, while, Khangte was convicted and the period of her detention from March 9, 2011 to April 30, 2013 has been taken as conviction period. The duo was arrested in March 3, 2011 after police intercepted two vehicles (MZ-01F-7535 and MZ-01F-3632) at Lukier Road Junction and detained three persons– Thapa, Khangte both from Aizawal and another Lalrobula Varte of Sunglinular (Mizoram).

During the search, some bags and cartoons were discovered inside these vehicles. On further checking from one cartoon which was taken out from one of the vehicles (MZ-01F-7535), 10 packets of psychotropic substances-Diazepam injection (Ipzepose) for IM on slow injection, one packet contain 10 strip of Diazepam injection, one strip containing five injection i.e. total 500 injections were recovered.

Accordingly, during the investigation led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem along with officers from the Anti-Narcotic Cell, prima facie case was found well established against the accused and accordingly the case was charge sheeted on June 26, 2011.
