West Jaintia Hills win men’s badminton events at Megh Meet

SHILLONG: West Jaintia Hills swept the individual men’s badminton events on the fourth day of the inter-distric Megh Meet 2013 sports event at the Tirot Sing Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

Mebanker Shullai defeated Kiefer W Shullai from East Khasi Hills to claim the men’s singles title.

In the doubles final, Ram Najiar and Unipaia overcame Kiefer W Shullai and Kynsai (East Khasi Hills) to take gold.

Christine J Ch Momin from West Garo Hills claimed the women’s gold by beating Eranecles Syiem (East Khasi Hills), while Theograce and Banadien teamed up to win the doubles title for East Khasi Hills.

They beat Balashembha and Wandaka from West Jaintia Hills.

The two districts of East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills have shown themselves to be formidable in badminton in the state, with the former winning the men and women’s team events on Wednesday.

On both occasions, they defeated teams from West Jaintia Hills in the finals.

Thursday also saw the semifinals of kho kho for both men and women.

The boys of East Khasi Hills outplayed East Garo Hills 21-16 while West Jaintia Hills beat North Garo Hills 19-13 to enter the final, which will be held on Friday at 10:30am at the JN Sports Complex, Polo.

The semis in the women’s category saw a narrow victory for East Jaintia Hills, who beat South Garo Hills 22-21.

East Garo Hills overcame East Khasi Hills by the more comfortable margin of 27 points to 19.

The handball semifinals witnessed South West Khasi Hills progressing to the finals for both the men’s and women’s category.

The other finalists in the men’s category are East Jaintia Hills, while Ri-Bhoi qualified for the women’s final, which will be held on Friday at 9:00am at the JN Sports Complex.

The men’s volleyball final will see South West Khasi facing East Khasi Hills in the final.

Volleyball is the only discipline where women are not competing.
