TURA: A teenager who put inside a lock-up of the Tura police station the night before was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Friday morning.
The 19-year-old boy identified as one Topu A Marak, a resident of Machakolgre locality, had been picked up from near Montfort School area on Thursday night in what police say was a case of alleged ‘drug addiction’.
Tura police claim that they were called in by a mothers’ organization about the presence of the teenager and on arrival at the scene found him to be in an unsteady condition with a bag that contained some strips of the banned drug Spasmo proxivon. “Seeing his condition we took him for medical examination to the hospital and also informed his family,” Tura police said.
However, instead of hospitalization for his condition the teenager was taken to the police station and put inside a cell for the night. The next morning he was reportedly found dead.
The reasons for not admitting the victim for medical treatment despite his condition remains unknown but police sources claim that at no point of time were they asked by doctors to get him hospitalized.
This is not the first time a person lodged inside a cell has died in the Tura police station.
Over twenty years ago, a young businessman died after he was severely assaulted by some police personnel inside the cell where he had been lodged for the night.
Businessman Raju Bujjal died from internal injuries allegedly sustained from an assault by a drunk police official and his juniors.
Action was taken against the erring cops only after a hue and cry was raised by the public.
