Action demanded against corrupt VEC members

 NONGPOH: All is not well in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Ri Bhoi District as the CORP Eastern Zone and the HNYF North Region Ri Bhoi District on Wednesday reiterating their demand for punishment of the corrupt Village Employment Council (VEC) members of Nongrim Nongladew allegedly involved in embezzlement of MGNREGS funds of over 30 lakhs rupees.

This was stated by CORP Eastern Zone general secretary K Lyngdoh to The Shillong Times on Wednesday after submission of a letter to the DC and District Programme Coordinator, Ri Bhoi District seeking information under RTI Act 2005 regarding MGNREGS case of Nongrim Nongladaw from 2008 till 2010-11.

He also said that after seeing no action being taken against the VEC despite their demands they have met the chief secretary to press for action against the erring members but yet still nothing happen so they took up the matter with D K Jain, senior official of the Union Rural Development Ministry who in turn asked the chief secretary to look into this matter.

Lyngdoh urged the Deputy Commissioner to take necessary actions against the erring VEC members else they will be compelled to take stern action and take up the matter with higher ups.

According to the letter signed by Lyngdoh and HNYF Northern Region general secretary A Jyrwa, they sought information from the DC as to what action has been taken against the VEC Nongrim Nongladew after the filing of FIR against them by Umsning BDO in order to retrieve the amount of Rs. 30, 40,783 according to the report of the District Ombudsman allegedly embezzled by the VEC.

They also demanded to know whether the State Rural Employment Society has completed the report or not after an enquiry has been conducted at the village and demanded a copy of the report if it has been submitted.
