SHILLONG: The MDP is likely to merge with the HSPDP in an attempt to strengthen the regional forces in the State.
Confirming this report, HSPDP vice president and Nongkrem legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Wednesday said that the process of the merger of the MDP with the HSPDP is in the final stages.
“We have agreed on many points for the merger to happen. I hope the whole process is completed at the earliest so that the two parties can come together as a combined force,” Basaiawmoit said.
Maintaining that the HSPDP is totally committed to the unity of the regional forces in the State, Basaiawmoit, however, said that the regional parties can come together only if they have a common agenda and view point.
In a veiled reference to the UDP, the HSPDP vice president said that it would be impossible for the regional parties to come together if they maintain diverse outlook.
It may be reminded that Basaiawmoit had left the UDP to join the HSPDP after being unhappy with the decision of the UDP to award the party ticket to a non-tribal in one of the constituencies in Garo Hills during the Assembly polls in February.
