Editor,

The event of 4th April was a simple case of organised assault on people. Sonie Kharduit has every right to express concern over it. Michael Syiem, not so skillfully, tries to communalise the issue by asking whether Kharduit had shown concern when Khasis have been assaulted in the past. He has also put “innocent people” in inverted commas; mercifully, he has refrained from putting “attack” in inverted commas.

Further, Singapore could transform from a third-world nation to a highly developed nation in such a short time because it didn’t have a group of people with outdated ideology, trying to scuttle, or extract their pound of flesh from, every step it took to usher in development and prosperity.

 Mushrooming of hostels

 Editor,

Just as the business of education is prospering the business of private “HOSTELS” is also prospering side by side. Such hostels are mushrooming all over the state, be it urban or rural areas. Most of these hostels do not have any formal or trained administrators, wardens or any management at all. We do not even know if these are registered with the government or if such a requirement exists. The need for accommodation in places of study do require hostels but government should have a regulatory mechanism in place to monitor such hostels. Remember that prevention is better than cure.

 Fake Universities

 Editor,

After CMJ University, the Mahatma Gandhi University at 13 Mile Khanapara also needs attention of all for its dubious character. At its website www.mgu.edu.in, it’s clearly understandable that the university is fake. It neither has a Visitor, Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Senate, Academic Council, administration nor are the names of its faculty mentioned anywhere. This seems to be in all aspects a bogus university. By which Act of the State Assembly were these universities passed and what was the criterion set by the govt when such universities were allowed to function from the State? This is a question many have been asking ever since the CMJ imbroglio surfaced. It’s very shameful to learn that in Meghalaya such rackets are allowed to flourish. Who is responsible for promoting such scams? People responsible for the formation of such universities should be booked under the law and the Government should take extreme steps to restore faith in the minds of the public when it comes to quality education. Sad to learn that many have fallen prey to these self-styled educationists.

 Plight of women

 Editor,

It is very painful to go through reports of child rape almost every day as published in your esteemed daily. Being an elderly woman and a mother I feel outraged yet helpless. What has happened to Shillong? Why do women and girl children no longer feel safe and secure here? Why should innocent children face the barbaric torture of the beastly creatures? Who will give the answer? How many more such heinous crimes will be committed by the culprits in open daylight inside the town area? Is this not anarchy? Can the law enforcers show a single instance of an exemplary punishment imposed upon any of the rape culprits in the state? If justice fails there is no court of appeal for the citizens. Hence stringent action should be taken in time to deter others from committing the same crime. Let us all work at restoring the lost glory of women in Meghalaya.
