Sex ratio reduced in Tripura; female literacy shows upward trend

 AGARTALA: The number of females has increased over the past ten years in Tripura with sex ratio standing at 960 against per thousand males, according to final census report-2011.

While the number of women stood at 948 against per thousand males in the 2001 census, it rose to 960 in the 2011 census report, said Deputy Director of Census Operations Aparesh Chowdhury.

Revealing the final census report, Chowdhury said the total population of the state stands at 36, 73,917 as per 2011 census report while it was 31,99,203 in 2001 census report. The rate of population growth was 14.8 per cent (474714 families).

The number of households increased by 28.8%, i.e, from 6, 64,334 in 2001 to 855556 in 201. But, there is no record of total percentage of houseless persons in the state.

The literacy rate has shown upward trend after it rose to 87.22 per cent in 2011 from 73.19 per cent in 2001 census report. Importantly the gap between male and female in the literacy was narrowed down over the past ten years. The women literacy percentage stands at 82.73 per cent in 2011 census and it was 64.91 per cent in the 2001 census.

The age-group between 0-6 has increased to 458014 in 2011 in comparison to 2001 when a total of 436446 population was registered in 2001, said Choudhury.

On the Scheduled Caste population, the rate was recorded at 17.8% of the total population. The sex ratio of scheduled caste population stood at 959 in 2011, whereas, the ratio was 962 before 10 years. In case of scheduled tribe population, the growth rate was higher in comparison to the scheduled caste population. The rate was counted at 31.8% of the total population.

The percentage of workers has increased by 26.7 % i.e, the total number of workers increased to 14,69,521 in 2011 from 11,59,561 in 2001.

But, Choudhury stated that the number of cultivators has been reduced by 2.2% and so the number of cultivable lands. As per the released data, only 20.1% of the total workers are cultivators.

On the contrary, the percentage of agricultural labourers was recorded at 24.1%. Later, Choudhury stated that 2.8% of the total workers were household industry workers. The rest 53% of the total workers came under the category of salaried personnel, self-employed and involved in non-agricultural activities.
