SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) seems to be divided over the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State.
While, NPP legislator James K Sangma supported a motion to implement ILP in the recently concluded Assembly session, party leader Conrad K Sangma doubted the efficacy of the system during a panel discussion held at St Anthony’s College here on Saturday.
“It is true that ILP will prohibit and put back outsiders from entering the State but it will only be a temporary solution,” Conrad said while stressing on the need to have strong work permit and other mechanisms to make people, both locals and outsiders, happy.
Terming the effects of the ILP as detrimental, Conrad said, “Just imagine if all the states in the country implement such laws what will be the fate of our people who are moving outside the State in large numbers for education and jobs.”
“There is a need to look at a broader perspective in the long-run to ensure that our people grow and have a stable future,” Conrad said while adding “We need to find the best solution, both short-term and long-term, keeping in mind the State and the global world we are living in.”
The former leader of Opposition asserted that the problem of influx needs to be looked at in a practical way without blocking the State from the rest fo the world.
