SHILLONG: A day after Wansuk Myrthong, a Meghalaya Police constable, scaled Mount Everest Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has announced that the State Government would felicitate her for the achievement.

“The government on behalf of the people of Meghalaya will accord her (Wansuk) due recognition and felicitation when she returns,” Dr Sangma said on Sunday. Myrthong who is a constable with the 1st Meghalaya Police Battalion became the first woman in the State and only the second individual from Meghalaya to scale the highest peak in the world.

The Chief Minister said that the State Government was very proud of her achievement as she has brought laurels for the State.

“It just goes to prove that when one aspires sincerely, nothing is impossible to achieve,” Dr Sangma said while hoping that her feat will inspire youths to aim for greater heights as ‘Wansuk has shown that no goal is insurmountable’.

It may be mentioned that Myrthong was part of the first North East India Mount Everest Expedition team.

Home Minister Roshan Warjri has already committed that Myrthong would be given an out of turn promotion for her achievement as acknowledgement by the department. “She has not only made her family and Meghalaya Police proud but she stands as a true symbol of pride for the women folk of the State,” the Minister had said.
