SHILLONG: In a major development, the absconding Human Resources Manager -cum- Controller of Examinations of CMJ University, Juban KB Kharpuri, surrendered before a local court here on May 17.

Informing of the development, CID sources on Monday said that they had sought for five days of police custody for Kharpuri but he got admitted in hospital citing ill-health.

“Once he is released from the hospital, we would begin his interrogation,” the sources said.

However, Chancellor of the University, CM Jha, and Director Dr. (Mrs.) Manjeet Kaur, are still on the run.

The pictures and details of the two absconding officials have been put up on the website of Meghalaya Police and CID has sought cooperation of the people to arrest the duo.

It was suspected that CM Jha has absconded to Bihar but according to CID, nothing is known about his whereabouts. The State CID has alerted its counterparts in different states to look for the absconding Chancellor.

Earlier, the CID sleuths searched the residence of the Director and recovered some incriminating documents and also seized the car.

Soon after the CMJ University fiasco first surfaced, the University office was vandalized. However, subsequent investigation indicated that one Kamlesh Kumar Chaurasia had damaged the computers and vandalized the office at the behest of the Director.

It may be mentioned that the court has already issued a non-bailable warrant against the absconding officials.
