NONGSTOIN: A three-day (22nd May to 24th May, 2013) District-level Inter-school Athletic Meet, organised by the office of the District Sport Officer, West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin, got underway on Wednesday at Nongpathar Outdoor Stadium Nongstoin.
The District Sport Officer, East Khasi Hills, GE Lyngdoh, was the chief guest at the inaugural function.
Besides the chief guest, other guests included the DSO, Nongstoin, and heads of different institutions.
A total of 14 co-educational schools comprising 427 athletes, both boys and girls, are taking part in the three-day athletic event.
While speaking at the inaugural function, Lyngdoh lauded the efforts of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department in Nongstoin for organising the meet for the benefit of the school students in the district.
He also stated that the objective of organising this meet is to bring unity and brotherhood among the children and urged them to show the true spirit of sportsmanship while playing in various events.
He also said that students should manage their time because there is the time to play and time to study and added that the children have a platform to showcase their talent.
Before Lyngdoh officially opend the meet, he encouraged one and all to take up sports as their career and represent not only the district but at the state level as well.
He also urged the children to compete fairly in the right spirit of the games.
A total of eight track events finals and 14 field events finals for both boys and girls in all age categories were conducted on the first day of the meet and many promising athletes will be taking part in this year’s meet.
