Gone are the days when nearly all the toppers owed their allegiance to one school or the other in Shillong. The fact that 13 students from Tura and four from Nongstoin among others made it to the top-20 speaks volumes about other districts making their presence felt in the educational map of the State.
Wizards of Garo Hills
One is seeking to break the IIT entrance exam to enter the world of technology while another is keen to make a mark in the global software industry. Others are looking to crack the Civil Services while one is aiming to be a top surgeon to give cutting edge surgical services to those who need it the most.
Welcome the global mind of the young students from Garo Hills who have tipped the scales to make a mark in this year’s SSLC examinations. As many as 13 brilliant students have found their names in the State’s top-20 list, by far the highest number in recent memory.
The success at the crucial Class X examinations of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) has given the much needed boost for education in this part of the State which is known more for militancy and crime related news that plague the Garo Hills.
The students who make up the list of toppers in this year’s examination spoke to The Shillong Times revealing their dreams and expectations that lay ahead.
Megha Manjari Mohanty of St. Xavier’s Secondary School who secured the second position in the State wishes to give back to the younger generation the same privileges she has received. “I want to be a teacher giving back to society,” says Megha who is the daughter of Don Bosco College lecturer P C Mohanty.
Young Gunsa Irma Ch Marak, also of St. Xavier’s, who jointly shared the third position, wants to crack the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) exam and join the Civil Services (IAS) to play an important role in the development of the country. Despite losing her father a year ago, Gunsa persevered with her studies with the guidance of her mother who is a teacher.
Ankita Bhattacharjee of Aeroville Secondary School (joint 4th position) wants to serve in the medical fraternity with special emphasis on children.
Arnab Kundu of Aeroville school (6th position) believes regular studies keeping track of the time one spends on his books can bring success. He wants to be an MBBS doctor.
With high ambitions these youngsters begin a new chapter of their life, on way to which they made Garo Hills proud.
Anderson HS School makes WKH proud
Anderson Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin made a name for itself and West Khasi Hills District bagging four positions in the top-20 merit list in the SSLC results declared by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) on Thursday while Mairang Presbyterian Higher Secondary School secured another position to make it five for the district which is considered as one of the lesser developed areas of the State.
The district also bagged a position in the HSSLC (Arts) examinations, results for which was also declared on Thursday.
While, I Primiya R.Lyngkhoi, Gliff Richard Nongsiej, Dibya Lakshmi Hajong and Ometaroi Shangrit of Anderson secured the 4th, 6th, 14th and 16th positions respectively, Aibandouglas Kharmawlong of Mairang Presbyterian Higher Secondary School bagged the 20th position in the rankings.
Anderson retained its top position in the SSLC results since its inception till date and has become the leading educational institution in the district. All the 34 students who appeared for the SSLC examinations from the school secured first division which is a record in itself in the State.
While, out of 32 candidates who appeared in the HSSLC (Arts) examination from the school, nine secured first division, 22 made it second and one candidate made the cut in third division.
Rimeiaka Lyngdoh bagged the 5th position for the school.
Talking to this scribe the principal of the school Ms. W. Sohkhelet said that Anderson made its greatest achievement this year since its inception. She attributed this milestone educational achievement to all the dedicated school teachers and school authorities in association with the hard working students supported by their own respective parents at home. She further stated that the school will introduce both Science and Commerce streams at the HSSLC level in the current academic session thus making it the first educational institute in Nongstoin to feature the courses.
Ri Bhoi misses out
Though most of the districts have found space in the top-20 list of students in the results of SSLC which was announced on Thursday, not a single student from Ri Bhoi failed made it to the toppers’ list in both SSLC and HSSLC examinations.
It would have been a similar case in West Jaintia Hills if not for Gloria Challam of KJP Synod Mihngi Higher Secondary School, Jowai who bagged the sixth position in HSSLC (Arts) examination.
The MBOSE Executive Chairman EP Khabhih while speaking to The Shillong Times said that there is no specific reason as to why students from Ri Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills should not make it to the toppers’ list.
“May be their school batch was not good,” he said while adding that there are some good schools in the districts.
2 Jowai schools secure 100 per cent pass percentage
KJP Synod Mihngi Higher Secondary School, Jowai recorded 100 per cent pass percentage in the HSSLC (Arts) while and Jaintia English Secondary School achieved the feat in the SSLC results declared by MBOSE on Thursday.
Gloria Challam, of KJP Synod Higher Secondary School secured 6th Position in the HSSLC (Arts) examinations securing 398 out of the total 600 marks with distinctions in MIL, Economics and Health Education. Sein Raij Higher Secondary School also recorded 100 per cent pass percentage in the HSSLC (Arts) examination and 84.36 per cent in the SSLC examination.A student of Nartiang Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Glorinda Kyaa secured the highest marks in MIL (90) in the State.
