Guwahati: He has two bullets of AK 47 assault rifle lodged in his body for over a year, still 15-year-old Amarsing Rongpi manages to go to school on foot everyday because of his indomitable spirit.
Amar, now a class eight standard student of Kekang Adang M E School in Karbi Anglong district of Assam. He hails from Deithar village in the hill district.
It was on February 25 last year Amar received two bullet injuries when a team of policemen opened fire on a mob of public at Deithar villages following a clash.
The public were protesting alleged illegal collection of money by police. Amar was going to the market, but found himself caught between the clashing police team and the angry villagers. He was hit by two bullets from behind – one is now embedded in his kidney and the other in the spinal cord.
Eight other persons who were injured in the incident of firing by police later recovered, but the bullets could not be removed from Amar’s body. He was first treated at nearby Vivekananda Hospital in Numaligarh Refinery township in Golaghat district where the doctors referred him to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).
After treating him for about a month, doctors in GMCH told the family members that it was impossible to carry out operation on Amar in the hospital to remove the bullets.
Left with no other option the poor parents brought Amar home and since then he has been pulling on without any medical care. The family has no resources to take him to any of the super-specialty hospitals outside the State for his treatment.
Amar says he sometimes feels extreme pain in his body and temperature of his body rises frequently. He can no longer play with his friends because of the pain and it has become difficult to concentrate on his study. Still, he goes to school every day carrying a bag full of books.
Neither the State government nor the district administration has come forward so far to extend help to the family to facilitate specialized medical care to Amar.
