CMJ Director in police custody; VC questioned

SHILLONG: Director of Chandra Mohan Jha (CMJ) University, Dr (Mrs.) Manjeet Kaur was on Tuesday remanded in ten-day police custody.

Kaur, who had been absconding since an arrest warrant was issued against her two weeks back, surrendered before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate here on Monday.

CID sources said that the court on Tuesday evening ordered police remand for Kaur. “We have got the orders and we will question here,” CID sources said.

Kaur hd on Monday moved a bail application but the plea has been kept in abeyance for two days.

After her surrender, the court had remanded her in 14-day judicial custody on Monday.

Meanwhile, CID sleuths on Tuesday questioned Prof BC Sarmah, Vice-Chancellor of the CMJ University on the irregularities in functioning of the varsity.

“We have questioned the Vice Chancellor of CMJ University on the irregularities in functioning of the varsity on the basis of the FIR lodged by the Governor’s Secretariat,” a CID official informed.

Prof Sarmah was grilled by a team of CID officials into the alleged fraud committed by the University by awarding fake degrees to hundreds of students from all over India.

“We have gathered some vital information from the Vice-Chancellor during the questioning and if we need more clarifications, we will summon him to come to the police station,” the CID official said. (With inputs from UNI)
