SHILLONG: Two trucks loaded with adulterated PDS sugar, mixed with cement particles, were seized by the East Garo Hills district administration on Tuesday.
According to the officials, it was on Monday morning that the trucks arrived at Williamnagar from FCI Guwahati and the Inspector of Supply found that it was mixed with cement particles and hence the whole seller was not allowed to download the packets.
On Tuesday, leaders of several NGOs, who also conducted the spot inspection, sought a magisterial probe into the matter.
East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mantri said on Wednesday that soon after the detection of adulterated sugar, the district administration decided not to accept the quota as the quality was not good.
“We have also given an order to the whole seller not to lift the sugar,” he added.
Another direction was to the FCI to provide good quality sugar, the Deputy Commissioner said, adding that EAC (Supply) will conduct an inquiry into the matter.
The NGOs have alleged that as many as 40 sugar bags were either torn or re-stitched and mixed with cement.
They also sought action against one Nanhe Lal, the supplier of sugar to the FCI at Williamnagar and also the local distributor, Samir Kundu.
