SHILLONG: Road connectivity in Garo Hills region is likely to get a major boost while traffic congestion in Tura town will be greatly reduced once the proposed Tura Bypass project comes into existence.

The Tura Bypass is being planned to come up from the 98th Kilometer to the 109th Kilometer of the National Highway 51 on the way to Dalu international border.

Sources said that the detailed project report (DPR) for Tura Bypass as well as double laning of NH-51 from the 98th Kilometer to Dalu border (148th Kilometer) via Tura would be submitted to the Ministry of Roads and Highways in September.

It is learnt that a firm from Jaipur has been consulted for making the DPR which is still under the verification stage. Once the sanction comes from the Centre, the National Highway Authority of India is likely to implement the project.

Meanwhile sources have indicated that land acquisition could be a hurdle for the ambitious project as is the case with any other project in Meghalaya.

At present, the PWD (NH Division) is marking the central line for the proposed roads after while attempts will be made to acquire land for the project.

It may be mentioned that in 1983, after prolonged persuasion, the Central Government had declared the road as NH 51 from 21 kilometers from Paikan (Assam) to 148 kilometers in Dalu.

At present 69 kilometers of the highway with double laning pavement has been constructed for smooth traffic movement.
