Guwahati: Assam government on Thursday announced to bear medical expenses of three teenagers suffering from thalassemia whose father had pleaded for their mercy killing as he was unable to afford the cost of the treatment.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the state government would bear the entire medical expenses of Shillong-based Abdur Rahim’s three sons – Sadik, Suhel and Samim – who have been suffering from the blood disorder for the past 16 years.

Rahim, who hails from Nagaon in Assam, owns a shoe shop and factory in Shillong.

On Tuesday, Rahim had said in a press conference that he would approach the Judiciary to plead for mercy killing of his three sons and himself as he was unable to meet their huge medical expenses.

He said he has to spend Rs 45,000 a month for regular blood transfusions of his three sons at a Guwahati hospital.

Officials also informed that Gogoi would meet Rahim on Friday in Guwahati. (PTI)
