SHILLONG: The Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) will host the fourth edition of the Meghalaya Icon to spread the message of HIV/AIDS among the youths through the medium of music.

The audition for the Meghalaya Icon will start from June 14 in various district headquarters, wherein musical bands, solo artists and even folk troupes are expected to compete for the prize money of one lakh rupees.

Unlike last year, where the audition was held in only three district headquarters, this year, the event will be held in Jowai, West Jaintia (June 14), Khliehriat, East Jaintia (June 15), Umsning, Ri Bhoi (June 21), Tura, West Garo (June 27), Williamnagar, East Garo(June 25) and Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi (June 22).

One winner from each district and four from Shillong will be selected to compete at the grand finale to be held in Shillong on July 6.

During the event, the MACS further decided to put up mobile ICTC for providing counseling at the venue in all the district events.

MACS event partner, Andreas War while highlighting more on the event said, “The participating bands and artists will have to compose a song about HIV/AIDS from which the best will be crowned with the ambassador title with an opportunity to sign a one year contract with the society for the purpose of creating awareness on the matter.” The language for the music will be in Khasi, Jaintia, Garo and English.

Stating that in the past three years bands from different parts of the State have been competing, War said, “This year a new addition has been made, which is the inclusion of not just bands but even solo artists and folk troupes.”
