Slain driver’s wife arrested

Agartala: Thirteen days after the sensational murder of three newspaper employees in the office of the vernacular daily at Agartala, police arrested the wife of slain driver of the editor Friday night in connection with the case.

Police said Niyati Ghosh was arrested on suspicion following her inconsistent statements to police at different stages because she had claimed to be one of the eye-witnesses of the case.

A group of senior police officers are interrogating her over the attack.

‘She has revealed several clues to the murder, which may help police to reach a reasonable conclusion soon,’ said an officer associated with the investigation.

The officer also stated that editor and proprietor of the newspaper Sushil Choudhury had tried to prevent the detention of Niyati Ghosh from his residence.

The investigation is proceeding with the angle of illicit relationship of Niyati but a definite conclusion had not been drawn yet.

A senior police officer, who did not want to be named said: “The killing… might be related to property (dispute) or illicit affairs.”

At around 1130 hrs, a team of Police officials visited the Ganadoot Bhawan and picked up Ms Ghosh for interrogation despite resistance from the newspaper owner.

‘We have arrested Ms Ghosh in order to expedite the murder probe. We are investigating the matter. Interrogation is also being carried out,’ SP (West) Bijoy Kumar Nag said, adding that more arrests will be followed in the coming days.

The investigators recovered a knife and collected some information about the motorbike in which the killers travelled. The cops also questioned the non-journalist staffers of Ganadoot Patrika.

In the incident, three of the paper’s staffers were stabbed to death by masked assailants.

Two unidentified assailants knifed the newspaper manager Ranjit Bhattacharjee (65), proof reader Sujit Chakraborty (31) and driver Balaram Ghosh (39) two weeks ago in the heart of the city in broad daylight.

Owner-cum-editor of the newspaper Sushil Choudhury was present in his room at the first floor when goons killed the trio, but he denied that he saw anything or heard any sound. Police said two of the victims were also strangled besides being stabbed. (UNI)
