Two held for drug possession

SHILLONG: The State Police on Friday night arrested two persons including a retired army personnel for illegal possession of drugs and booked them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem informed that police recovered 11 grams of fine quality heroin concealed in small tin boxes from their possession.

The arrested persons have been identified as Thangboi Vaiphei, a retired havildar of the Assam Regiment, and Lalsawmliana Hmar following raids conducted by the District Anti-Narcotic Task Force.

It is learnt that the heroin was smuggled from Myanmar and was meant for the market in Shillong.

“We seized nine grams of heroin concealed in small tobacco tins from the residence of Hmar and another two grams of heroin also concealed in the small tins from the house of Vaiphei,” Syiem said, while refusing to divulge further details.

Both the accused have been remanded in five-day police custody.
