SHILLONG: The failure of the police to arrest Ampati police station officer in charge Narul Islam has allegedly led to his escape. Police sources informed that the rape accused Sub Inspector was not put inside the lock up at Tura police station but lodged in his official quarter, which was nearby, instead.

“The officer in charge would not have escaped if he would have been put inside the lock up. To not arrest him was a serious blunder,” police sources said on Sunday.

Questions are also being raised on the ‘special treatment’ given to the police man who was allowed to stay at the police quarters.

Few police personnel led by Ampati police station second in charge Sub Inspector Pyniarborlang Lynshiang were asked to guard the house of Islam, official sources informed. While Lynshiang remained inside Islam’s quarter, the other three police personnel waited outside.

“Islam managed to escape from the backdoor during the early hours of Sunday morning,” sources said.

Earlier sources said, “The police did not want to arrest him from Ampati police station since he was the officer in charge of the police unit and it would have been a huge embarrassment if he was arrested there.”
