SHILLONG: An embarrassed State Government on Monday suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bijoy Chettri and three constables of the Meghalaya 2nd Battalion – Bibith Sangma, Logindro Marak and Damien Momin – for their negligence which resulted in the escape of Sub Inspector Narul Islam who allegedly raped two minor girls at Ampati police station.

The action follows a high-level meeting of Home Minister Roshan Warjri with senior police officials.

Warjri also expressed shock over the incident and added that several steps are being taken to ensure justice to the victims.

The DSP was suspended for his failure to ensure that Islam remained in the custody of the police, while the three constables were punished for failing to guard the accused at his Tura quarters.

Ampati PS second in charge Sub Inspector Pyniarborlang Lynshiang was sacked on Sunday for dereliction of duty.
