Bank account of accused frozen, property to be attached

TURA: A court on Monday issued a non-bailable warrant against rape accused policeman, Narul Islam, while police have frozen his bank account.
Inspector General of Police, Western Range, H Nongpluh, told reporters at a news conference here on Monday that police have also decided to attach his property.
“Besides taking these steps, every possible measure is being taken to trace the accused. The police are not shielding the culprit and we are confident that he will be arrested soon,” Nongpluh said.
The IG, while expressing regret over the lapses on the part of the police, also reminded that among other actions taken by the police included the suspension of those involved including the three battalion constables guarding the rape accused Islam.
On the reason why Islam was taken to Tura, the IG said that though a case was registered at Ampati police station, a crowd had gathered at the police station and to prevent any unrest, the accused was shifted to Tura on May 31 where his arrest was supposed be effected the next day. As he was not yet arrested, he was taken to his staff quarters just opposite the Tura Police Station under the guard of Sub Inspector P Lynshiang and three constables from the Meghalaya 2nd Battalion.
“However at about 5.30 am on Sunday the accused managed to give the guards a slip and escaped. He has been absconding since then,” the IG added.
According to the IG, the police are leaving no stones unturned on the matter and law will take its own course of action.
