SHILLONG: One woman sustained injuries after a wall of her house, a part of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation at Sawlad Demthring, collapsed on Wednesday morning.

The house collapsed when the lady, identified as Cecilia Daimari, wife of Mission Nongrum, was washing clothes in her house alone at around 12:30pm during heavy rain.

Daimari, who sustained major injuries on her legs and spine, stated that she was washing clothes when she suddenly saw water dripping from the walls of her bedroom.

“When I went to the bedroom to have a closer look, suddenly the wall collapsed,” she narrated.

According to Daimari’s husband, he had complained of the poor and weak condition of the walls of the quarters, constructed in 1988, to the authority many a time but nothing was done from their part to ensure the safety of the people living in these quarters.

“We have asked the Civil Engineer to conduct an inspection in the around the area to check for leaked pipelines besides others and the same was done but no steps were taken to renovate these quarters,” Nongrum said.
