Youth development seminar held

 SHILLONG: A seminar on youth development was held St Mary’s College, here on Thursday as part of the year long platinum jubilee celebration. The theme of the seminar was illuminating new horizons.

The chief guest, Matsiewdor War, Director, Arts and Culture, lauded the college for its achievement and services for the past 75 years,

War in her speech highlighted the role of the youth in nurturing the identity and fulfilling their potentialities.

She also stressed the need for the youth to focus on tapping their talents and to equip themselves with life skills to face challenges.

During the first session of the seminar, the resources person Prof. Sukalpa Bhattacharjee, Department of English, NEHU, highlighted various aspects of gender and gender studies.

She summarized the various theories on gender and the historical significance behind these theories, and brought into context the role of women in conflict areas of North East India and the world pointing out that the main stream media often projected women only as victims of violence and tends to club them together with children as causalities of violence.

During the second session, the resource person Fr. Saji, SDB, department of computer science, St. Anthony’s College, said with the use of internet via cell phones , face to face socialization is endangered and the social skills of young people now can be seen to be degenerating. The use of networking site can be addictive and there should be a control as well as limited access to such networking site rather than saying never use it at all, he added.
