SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday came down heavily on the silence of the University Grants Commission (UGC) on the issue of CMJ University scam, terming the attitude of the UGC as yet another clear case of discrimination against the Northeastern states.
“Since CMJ University claimed to be a UGC recognized university, it is the duty of the UGC to issue a statement regarding the functioning of this University but its silence on the matter shows the lack of commitment of the UGC towards the Northeastern region,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said.
While questioning the adamant attitude of the UGC on the matter, the KSU leader said that they have asked Governor RS Mooshahary to take up the matter with Union HRD Minister Dr MM Pallam Raju, who is currently in Shillong.
According to Khyriem, the Governor will meet the Union Minister and the State Education Minister, Prof. RC Laloo to discuss the matter and to ask the Education department to examine the authentication of the University.
Talking to news persons outside Raj Bhavan following their meeting with the Governor, Khyriem said the Governor has consented to issue directives to the State Government to ease the troubles of the students of the University.
Meanwhile, an outstation student from Assam, Jitu Dutta, who is pursuing BTech (4th semester) from Jorabat Campus of the CMJ University informed that he and some other students had approached the UGC regional office in Guwahati regarding the matter by the UGC Deputy Secretary refused to hear their pleas and advised them to visit the Delhi office to sort out their grievances.
“They keep on telling us to take the matter to Delhi. If that is the case then what is the point in having a UGC centre stationed at Guwahati? They are supposed to provide answers and help us but instead they have turned their back on us which is very disappointing,” the student said.
He further added that after they were denied help from the UGC regional office, they had to come to Shillong almost every alternate day to discuss the matter with the fellow students of the University and chalk out plans to address the issue with the help of the State Government.
