Kohima: The indefinite economic blockade called by the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam on the National Highway 29 and NH 36 at Dokmoka, leading to Nagaland has been lifted temporarily, following the directives issued by the central committee of the All Assam Adivasi Students Association (AAASA) Friday evening
According to sources that the AASAA has submitted a charter of demands to the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat, stating that the blockade has been lifted temporarily while the AASAA Charter of Demands is under consideration.
The AASAA demanded the arrest of the culprits responsible for the June 3 incident at the Naganijan area bordering Assam, which led to the death of one Adivasi worker. It also demanded that Assam police be deployed at the tea estate areas bordering Nagaland.
The movement of commercial vehicles, which had been detained at Sarihajan under Bokajan sub division of Karbi Anglong district of Assam, is reported to have resumed since the late evening. It may be noted that around 300 commercial vehicles were denied passage to Dimapur by AASA volunteers since the morning of June 6.
Meanwhile, the blockade imposed by the All Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (AATTSA) on Mokokchung and northern Nagaland at Mariani and some other entry points to Nagaland continued and the northern districts of Nagaland is totally cut-off with Assam.
At Mokokchung, the blockade called by the Ao Senden on the Nagaland side of the border continued for the 12th day on Saturday.
The Ao Senden called for the blockade on roads to Mokokchung district protesting frequent harassment meted on Nagaland bound vehicles and its passengers in Assam.
The Ao Senden has cautioned all concerned Naga citizens to take precautionary measures while travelling to different parts of bordering areas, until the “current disputes are solved at the highest level.”
A press note by the President of the Ao Senden, Dr Sangyu Ao and the General Secretary, Tsupong Longchar stated that the Ao Senden had received reports of “some elements trying to take advantage of the present uncomfortable situation between Assam and Nagaland by creating unnecessary harassments and tormenting the innocent citizens boarding trains and other means of transports.”
Tension had erupted on May 24, when suspected adivasi workers created trouble in Mariani by damaging two vehicles traveling to Nagaland, which also led to the injury of eight people. The situation worsened on June 3, where an exchange of fire near the Naganijan area led to the death of one adivasi worker. (UNI)
