TURA: In a press statement, the Mothers’ Union, Tura expressed its utter dismay and shock over the dramatic escape of the Sub Inspector, Narul Islam, Ampati PS who had allegedly raped two minors.
Mothers’ Union said they are not against the Police as they are an essential part of the social fabric but the Union is against such casual attitude, unprofessionalism and incompetence of some policemen who throw bad light on the entire police force.
“It has come to the knowledge of the Union that the wife of the accused was present at the quarter at the time of the escape and that the accused, Narul Islam, was taken straight to his quarter rather than being handed over to Tura PS Thana as had been ordered by the IGP.
This brings us to introspect that the escape was pre-planned and arranged” stated the Union.
Mentioning that immediate arrest had not been made due to in the words of a senior official that they “felt bad to do so because he was a fellow officer” the Union opined that to women – such answer makes no sense and added “Crime against women weighs nothing when the perpetrator belongs to a ‘Privileged class’!”
The Union is demanding that the enquiry which is on should not drag on for months or years which is often the case in departmental enquiries and also that the two policemen who are under suspension at the moment, once the enquiry is over and if found guilty of any involvement in the accused’s escape regardless of whether he is apprehended or not, immediate termination of their services should be imposed.
“The actions of the two policemen who are under suspension at the moment clearly indicate their involvements in the staged drama of the escape. Therefore, in no way their suspensions should be revoked on any excuse or ploy” stated the Union.
The Union further said they want the Police to be more alert and prompt in their intelligence and actions. Since the Tura PS had been informed of the decision to move the accused to Tura Thana, the concerned authority should have treated it seriously and been anxious enough to worry about any delay in the arrival of the accused at the Thana within the expected time.
Mother’s Union also pointed out that the immediate action by making necessary enquiry could have led to the knowledge of the accused being taken to his quarter in time to unveil the intended escape and stop the same and likewise, the concerned authority of Ampati PS should have enquired whether the accused had reached the Tura PS whatever may be the time of the night; the duty should have been given prior importance to ensure the success of the operation.
“Gross negligence on the part of the senior officers has been exposed and who are now all trying to pin the blame on anyone but themselves” the Union said while adding that the anomalies in the Police Force should be studied and looked into seriously by the concerned Heads of the Department.
Lastly the Union said, “The time of retrospection and excuses has ended. Action, clear and decisive is the need of the hour if such mistakes are not to be repeated and police personnel especially of lower grade should be trained to maintain certain decorum while dealing with civilians for many a times, they are ill mannered and uncivilized”.
