Jorhat (Assam): Residents of Jengraimukh village in Assam”s Jorhat District have welcomed the construction of a river embankment by the local authorities.

Jadav Doley the village sarpanch said: “There are many problems due to erosion. Even last year the Jengraimukh town area was in danger. But now, after the embankment is constructed, we think we”ll not suffer due to floods.”

Villagers have formed seven groups, comprising 15 members each, who are engaged in the construction work on a rotational basis. The workers get Rs.150-200 per day. Ranjit Patir, 24, who belongs to a poor family, is happy working on the project.

“By working here we can look after our families. We have to make cases and we get Rs.180 for each of them. We try to make 20-25 boxes and divide the money amongst ourselves. We feel good doing this work,” said Patir.

The embankment will help in reducing losses suffered by people during floods. Such projects also provide jobs for the local youth. (ANI)
