Tripura editor sent to 4-day police custody

AGARTALA: A local court has sent mastermind of triple murder Sushil Chowdhury, to four days police custody for thorough interrogation.

Chowdhury, editor cum owner of Danik Ganadoot, a vernacular Bengali daily, fell sick on Monday- the day he was supposed to before the court. The mastermind of the triple murder was immediately taken to GBP Hospital from Agartala central jail and later he was shifted to ICU. But a five-member medical team headed by Dr. K. Dole, after conducting examination on Wednesday, declared the 73-year old editor fully fit.

Armed with the medical report, police produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Biswajit Palit here on Wednesday seeking seven days police custody.

Initiating the hearing, Public Prosecutor Tapan Saha claimed circumstantial evidences indicate Chowdhury’s hand in the murder of three newspaper employees- Ranjit Chowdhury, Sujit Bhattacharjee and Balaram Ghosh on May 19.

“Huge money was withdrawn from the bank account of Chowdhury a day before the triple murder. This indicates his involvement in the sensational case”, he pointed out.

Many questions into the sensational murder case remain unanswered and only Chowdhury could give clarifications, Saha said adding that if police get him their custody for interrogation the cloud gathered would be cleared. Earlier, the police had arrested Niyati Ghosh, wife of slain driver Balaram Ghosh, on May 31 in connection with case and she is now in jail.
