SHILLONG: The increased violence and crimes against women in Matrilineal Meghalaya can be attributed to the tremendous decline in the moral standard, observed Governor RS Mooshahary.
“There is a need to strengthen the religious institutions because it appears that somehow religion has failed to bridge the gap between good and bad,” Mooshahary said adding that religion is a failure in itself unless its teachings are being followed.
He was addressing at the release function of a religious book on “The Philosophy and Essence of Niam Khasi” authored by J Kerrsing Tariang held at Seng Khasi College here on Saturday.
Maintaining that religion is a composite of the entire quality of a society, Governor said all religion teaches one to be good and responsible human beings. He however, observed that though people visited the religious institutions, they have however, failed to follow their teachings.
While stating that Religion is an integral part of culture, he said that people are not following the teachings of their religion even as they visit their religious institutions.
Urging the Khasi religion (Niam Khasi) and other religions to strengthen their institution, Mooshahary said that there is a need to see that their teachings and principles are translated into practice by their faithful.
He further pointed out that the essence of teachings of the Niam Khasi is also found in other religions which all strive for the quest for truth.
The book is a comprehensive essence of Khasi faith, traditions and beliefs.
