SHILLONG: The State Government will review the status report of the Ampati twin rape case submitted by Commissioner and Secretary (Home) Jopthiaw Lyngdoh next week.
Informing this here on Saturday, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said the meeting which would discuss the progress of the Amapti twin rape case will be held either on Monday or Tuesday.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had recently criticized Lyngdoh’s report terming it as ‘incomplete’. The Commission had also stated that the stand taken by the State Government and police might impact the fairness and accuracy of investigation.
Reacting to this, the Home Minister said that the departmental procedures have been initiated and enquiry is heading in the right direction. “We are working very hard on the case but we need more time to come to a definite conclusion,” Warjri said while adding that the government has acted promptly and several police personnel are already under suspension.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bijoy Chettri and three constables of the Meghalaya 2nd Battalion – Bibith Sangma, Logindro Marak and Damien Momin – were suspended for their negligence which resulted in the escape of Sub Inspector Nurul Islam who allegedly raped two minor girls at Ampati police station. A non-bailable warrant has also been issued against Islam.
Warjri informed that other cases besides the Ampati twin rape case would also be discussed in the meeting scheduled next week.
Meanwhile, expressing dismay over the delay in solving the Ampati twin rape case, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said that the government is only good at verbal assurances.
“We are working on ways to unravel the truth and will make use of the RTI act,’ Kharshiing said. When enquired if any communication was made with the government in this regard, Kharshiing said “Enough of meeting them and giving them letters as it has not yielded any fruitful result.”
