SHILLONG: Though much was expected from the Shillong Bypass in reducing traffic snarls in Shillong city, but the traffic situation within the city has more or less remained the same as it used to be before the completion of Bypass.

For the past few days, the disheartening traffic scenario in many parts of the city remained the same with hundreds of vehicle overtaking each other to make it early to their locations.

Earlier heavy motor vehicles including trucks were believed to be the main cause of traffic snarls but even now the city roads are packed most times of the day though heavy vehicles are diverted from the Bypass.

The numbers of vehicles are increasing at a rapid pace and till date there is no road expansion plans from Government which could reduce traffic congestion to a large extent.

The traffic situations gets worsens with vehicles flouting norms to overtake during traffic jams and other vehicles too make a beeline which leads to further deterioration of the situation.

The narrow but over packed roads of Shillong city are manned by 220 Shillong Traffic Police sleuths.
