TURA: The daring act of lobbing a powerful crude explosive device inside the compound of the Williamnagar police station on Sunday night was an attempt on part of suspected GNLA militants to cause mayhem.

Police officials believe the act was in retaliation for the attack on GNLA chief Sohan D Shira’s camp a week ago.

Unidentified militants had lobbed the crude bomb at Williamnagar PS at around 11.30 pm. There were no casualties in the incident. According to official sources, the militants sneaked into the police campus from the rear portion of the complex which houses the staff quarters since the police station and the barracks are manned by armed sentries round the clock.

The unidentified militants lobbed the crude bomb from a distance which landed between two staff quarters and exploded sending a huge sound wave and shrapnel all around.

Security forces cordoned off the area shortly after and recovered the remains of the explosive device which contained ball bearings and other shrapnel meant to cause maximum damage.

It may be mentioned that in the attack on GNLA chief’s camp, security forces destroyed several makeshift houses and confiscated weapons and other items besides engaging a group of GNLA ultras in a firefight.

The attack on the GNLA camp led to the recovery of two foreign made pistols, explosives and also ULFA letter-pads.
