SHILLONG: Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal informed on Monday that the Assembly Secretariat is currently preparing a concept paper for the proposed new Assembly building.

“We are preparing the concept paper so that we can have an idea of the land required for the project. It would be a futile exercise to constitute the Search Committees to select the suitable site (for the new Assembly building) unless we know how much land we require for the project,” Mondal said.

According to him, the concept paper would also

have various vital information of the proposed project like the number of committee rooms, parking space, staff quarters, MLA hostels among others.

“We would need a bigger area if we have to construct the staff quarters and MLAs hostels,” he said.

He also informed that minute details have to be worked out as the whole project would be funded by the Centre.

The Assembly Speaker has also suggested that it would not be a bad idea to send a team to visit States like Tripura, Manipur and Uttarkhand who have just constructed new Assembly buildings.

“We can collect some vital inputs from these States on how they went about constructing their Assembly buildings,” Mondal said.

He said that the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has also assured that the Government would provide all possible support to see that the State has the new Assembly building as soon as possible.

“I am hopeful that the long cherish dream of the people of the State of having its own Assembly building would be become a reality during his tenure as the Speaker,” Mondal added.
