NONGSTOIN: A one-day sensitization and interactive programme on issues related to crime and violence against women and children was held recently at the multipurpose hall of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills.
Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh graced the function as the chief guest, which was also attended by the Deputy Commissioner A Mawlong and the Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), T Phanbuh.
Organised by the MSCW in collaboration with the district administration of South West Khasi Hills, the sensitization programme was well attended by school students, teachers, members of the Village Defence Party, Mawkyrwat, police officials, resource persons and the members of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Lyngdoh expressed his deep concern over the rising cases of crimes and violence against women and children in the district and the State as a whole.
Pointing out that the State Government has been trying hard to strengthen the law machinery in order to curb crime and violence against women and children in the State, Lyngdoh stated that special courts have been set up in different district headquarters.
Lyngdoh appealed to the head of the villages and members of the VDP to work together with the District Administration, the police department and the MSCW in order to eradicate all forms of crimes against women and children.
