SHILLONG: The annual conference of the State Minorities Commission, held earlier this month, has asked all the states to establish mohalla peace committees in every neighbourhood that has a history of communal outbreak.
The conference this year focused on the theme of police and minorities and was attended by NGOs, members of national and state minorities commission and senior State government officials dealing with minorities.
The recommendations of the Commission were also forwarded to the chief secretaries of all states and union territories.
The commission also recommended that youth and women can be included in the mohalla peace committees as they can play a vital role in building partnership between police and the minorities.
The Commission also called for a pre-emptive alert for a calendar of festivals throughout the year in which large assemblies and processions are warranted.
It also said that proactive measures by the Chief Secretary and DGP of a state to pick up signs of communal tension and scotching of rumours is required to avoid any communal flare up.
