‘NPP remark on CM’s mother a political conspiracy’

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma on Thursday demanded the immediate retraction of NPP allegation that the government is dilly-dallying on the arrest of rape accused cop Nurul Islam as he is a relative of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma’s mother Late Roshanara Begum.

Zenith also warned of legal action against NPP legislator James K Sangma if the latter fails to unconditionally retract the ‘false and defamatory’ statement.

The NPP spokesperson had recently dragged the Chief Minister’s mother into the Ampati twin rape case controversy alleging that the government was going slow as far as investigation in to the case is concerned “as the accused was related to Dr Sangma’s mother”.

Speaking to reporters here, Zenith, who is also the brother of Dr Sangma, refuted the allegation that Islam, the sub inspector accused of raping two minor sisters, is related either to the Chief Minister or his mother.

Islam, who allegedly raped the two sisters in Ampati, the Assembly constituency of the Chief Minister, has been on the run despite issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him.

According to Zenith, James Sangma being an elected member of the State Assembly should not have made such irresponsible statements.

“This is a very cheap way of trying to be in the news,” he said. Zenith also alleged political conspiracy behind the statement made against the Chief Minister.

“It seems the MLA knows where the accused is loitering and he should inform the law enforcing agencies about it,” the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister said.

Zenith also said that the Government is serious in tackling crime against women and children. “Any such case will be dealt with seriously,” he said.

Islam was picked up on June 1 on charges of rape and molestation. However, he escaped from police custody from Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills and the police Department had issued a look-out notice against the tainted cop who has been suspended from service.
