Guwahati: In order to improve the quality of human resources in its ranks, Assam Police has decided into introduce Police Eligibility Test (PET) for recruiting constables and sub-inspectors. The modalities of holding PET were finalized in a meeting of senior police officials of the State that was presided over by the Director General of Police J N Choudhury.

A competent organization from outside the State would be engaged to conduct the PET.

The PET management committee will comprise of senior Assam Police officials as well as officials from paramilitary forces.

Separate examinations will be conducted for recruitment to the ranks of constable and sub-inspector.

A candidate will be called for the next stage of selection process once he/she clears the PET.

Assam police authority has decided to adopt PET for direct recruitment to its rank as part of its efforts to augment the quality of human resources in the department which needs a massive uplift in view of changing law and order and crime scenario in the state.

A senior police official commented that PET would help police department to select candidates who have a vast knowledge base besides having qualities required for taking up policing job.

The police authority believes that introduction of PET will lead to less political interferences in carrying out recruitment to the police department.

In the existing system of recruitment there are scopes for such interference at the cost of efficiency and quality manpower in the department.

The State Police headquarter after finalizing the modalities for PET, will forward the proposal to the State Home Department for approval which is required for issuing a final notification on the matter.

The rising activities of Maoists in Assam have thrown up a bigger challenge to the state police force which is in need of some cool and intelligence brains at the field level to live up to the occasion.
